Derby Film Festival Presents

Ken Loach Q+A + screening of Sorry We Missed You

Thursday 14th November / 6:00pm

Ken Loach has been a significant figure in the film industry for the over fifty years. Ken’s career isn’t easy to summarise in a short paragraph but the impact of his films has been significant and have lasted the test of time. From his beginnings with feature films Poor Cow (1967) and the seminal Kes (1969) to the Palme D’Or winning I, Daniel Blake (2016), Ken’s films have struck to the heart of British life and shined a spotlight on the working class and those lost in the unjust systems. We are delighted to present Ken Loach the Derby Film Festival 2019 Hero Of Cinema Award and screen his new film Sorry We Missed You (2019).

Sorry We Missed You

Ricky and his family have been fighting an uphill struggle against debt since the 2008 financial crash. An opportunity to wrestle back some independence appears with a shiny new van and the chance to run a franchise as a self-employed delivery driver. It’s hard work, and his wife’s job as a carer is no easier. The family unit is strong but when both are pulled in different directions everything comes to breaking point.

Rigourously researched via off-the-records interviews, Sorry We Missed You depicts the ruinous cost of zero-hours contract with gut-wrenching honest and integrity. A furious and heart-breaking film, it offers a rigourous and damning critique of our unequal system; showing how it unscrupulously exploits people, especially those from lower socio-economic backgrounds, and robs them of dignity, agency and hope for change
